Quickly learn about common children’s eye conditions, what they mean, and how early assessment may help protect visual development

Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, is when one eye develops weaker vision than the other during childhood, even though the eye itself may look normal. This happens because the brain starts to rely more on one eye and uses the other eye less during visual development. Over time, the weaker eye does not develop normal vision. Amblyopia is an important condition to pick up early because children often do not complain about blurred vision, which means it can be missed without proper screening or assessment.

Strabismus means the eyes do not point in the same direction at the same time. One eye may turn in, out, up, or down. Often described as misaligned eyes, it is a common condition in children. Strabismus can affect appearance, depth perception, and how the eyes work together. In some children, it is linked to focusing problems, developmental issues, or poor control of eye alignment. Treatment may involve glasses, patching, eye exercises, or surgery depending on the cause and whether amblyopia is also present.

Tear duct obstruction happens when the normal drainage pathway for tears is blocked or does not open properly. In children, this often causes persistent watering, sticky discharge, or tears overflowing onto the cheek even when the child is not crying. While some cases improve over time, ongoing symptoms can be uncomfortable and may need treatment if the blockage does not clear on its own. A proper eye assessment helps confirm the diagnosis and the next step.
